The Sanitation Manager reports to the FSQA Manager, and is responsible for overseeing the Sanitation Departments across all Company meat production facilities, and for ensuring that our standard sanitation operating procedures (SSOPs) are aligned with industry best practices and in compliance with regulations from OSHA, USDA, and other regulatory agencies. This requires working knowledge of such regulations, strong written and verbal communication, and the ability to think critically and problem solve. This also requires the ability to guide and develop junior leaders and staff members, including talent planning and managing performance of the team.

General Responsibilities:
  • Ensure SSOPs are in compliance with or exceeding standards outlined by OSHA, USDA, and other regulatory agencies. As appropriate, provide guidance and ideas to enhance sanitation practices.
  • Responsible for supervising the sanitation function and Sanitation Associates, including leaders and teams across multiple facilities, time zones, and different shifts. This includes proper development and training for Sanitation Supervisors and Associates to ensure high level job performance and ongoing job satisfaction.
  • Development and performance management of Sanitation team leaders
  • Provide insight and assist in strategic decision making for sanitation teams to ensure appropriate staffing level, reliability of staff, and quality of service at all plants.
  • Administrative tasks (e.g.,  checking emails, scheduling Associates to meet department needs, approving time off requests, performance management and documentation, checking inventory, etc.).
  • Communicate and collaborate with other Meat Department leaders and other departments across the Company to ensure safety and sanitation of equipment.
  • Be able to fill in for line supervisors in emergency situations. These duties include: ensuring equipment is in good working order and maintaining a safe working environment for all Associates. This requires being present on the floor to monitor, observe, and supervise. While on the floor, the Sanitation Supervisor is monitoring safety by making sure Associates are wearing the appropriate personal protective gear, using tools adequately, not leaving hoses on ground, using ladders correctly, not mixing chemicals, etc.

An ideal candidate would have:
  • 5 years of sanitation experience in a food production facility 
  • 3 years of supervisory experience, preferably in a ground beef facility
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science, Meat Science, Food Science, Food Safety, Microbiology, or related field, or, a minimum of three years of progressive supervision, preferably in a USDA-FSIS or FDA food production regulated establishment
  • Knowledge of the “7 Steps of Sanitation,” sanitary equipment design, and process effectiveness assessments
  • The ability to mentor and develop talent with varying levels of experience
  • Effective critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively across departments
  • Knowledge of HACCP (USDA) and/or Preventive Controls for Human Food (FDA) principles
  • Experience and implementation of a GFSI scheme, e.g. BRC, through a cross-functional team approach
  • Knowledge of environmental testing procedures and result interpretation
  • A strong working knowledge of occupational safety standards
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office, i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SPC software

Work Schedule + Benefits:
  • Full-time position, exempt
  • Position is based out of our Baldwin Park, CA facility 
  • Approximate schedule: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM; generally Monday – Friday, but some weekends and nights required 
  • As the key leader for all sanitation teams, this leader will need to determine the best times/shifts to work in order to meet departmental needs. Frequency will be somewhat dependent on the development of effective supervisors. It is expected that at least one night per week will be needed.
  • Special projects, advanced training, or other departmental needs may necessitate some travel.

Physical Demands/Requirements:
  • Frequent lifting, standing, reaching, climbing, pulling, stooping, bending, and kneeling 
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 70 lbs. 
  • Ability to climb ladders and not be afraid of heights
  • Ability to withstand varied environmental conditions, such as cold and heat, extreme wet, within closed surroundings 
  • Will work in cold, damp environments; will work in warm, damp environments 
    • Production rooms are warm when cleaning them: 70-80°F
    • Occasional work assignments in temperatures as low as 34°F
  • Will wear rain gear while hosing down equipment 
  • Must constantly maintain mental focus and awareness of surroundings
